Children in the Nigeria-Biafra War: A study On Their Evacuation, Rehabilitation and Repatriation
Abstract
The Nigeria-Biafra War which lasted from 6 July 1967 to 15 January 1970 brought about the largest ecumenical undertaking in history and an airlift second only to the Berlin airlift. The driving force of that singular humanitarian rescue mission was the spectacle of starving and dying Biafran children, the innocent victims of a ruthless civil war. Indeed, the plight of the Biafran children in that civil war gave rise to modem humanitarianism with its various san frontier trappings. While millions of children were saved from certain death inside the enclave, thousands more were evacuated to friendly African countries, notably Ivory Coast, Gabon and the Island of Sao Tomi. Given the underlying antagonisms of the civil war, the evacuation, repatriation and rehabilitation of these children presented venJ daunting challenges. This paper is a study of the heroic and successful efforts of the Christian Relief Agencies in collaboration with the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria to overcome these overwhealming challenges. The source materials employed in the work were derived mainly from the archives of these humanitarian organizations which have remained largely unutilized.
