Abstract
The increasing use of digital technologies has opened new possibilities for the development, preservation, and transmission of African languages. However, it has also introduced significant challenges for languages such as Igbo, especially in relation to accessibility, orthography, user attitude, and technological infrastructure. This study investigates the challenges and prospects of Igbo language use in digital spaces, focusing on online applications, social media networks, and other technology-mediated platforms. The study adopts a qualitative research method, drawing data from oral interviews, online interactions, and observations of Igbo language use on digital platforms. Findings reveal that Igbo users are making meaningful efforts to adapt the language to digital communication through borrowing, semantic extension, code-mixing, abbreviation, and other creative linguistic strategies. These practices have contributed to the growing presence of Igbo in digital spaces and have helped users maintain cultural identity in technologically mediated communication. Despite these developments, the study identifies several challenges affecting the effective use of Igbo in the digital age. These include the dominance of foreign languages, limited availability of convenient Igbo diacritics on digital devices, poor internet connectivity, power failure, high cost of digital tools, and conservative attitudes toward linguistic innovation. The study concludes that addressing these challenges will enhance the digital presence of Igbo and strengthen its role as a vibrant expression of African identity in the technological era.
