Igbo Studies Association (USA) Receives an African Studies Association Grant for its 15th Annual International Conference in Nigeria

The African Studies Association (ASA) is pleased to announce a $1,000.00 grant to support the 15th Annual International Conference of the Igbo Studies Association (USA), holding June 8-10, 2017, in Owerri, Nigeria.

The Igbo Studies Association is an affiliate organization of the African Studies Association. It organizes international conferences every year, in order to bring together academics, professionals, organizations, and students working on all aspects of Igbo studies for a broader exchange, debate and advancement of knowledge in their various disciplines.

"Holding this year’s conference in Owerri, in Igboland, is a further opportunity for some of us engaging in Igbo studies in universities all over the world to live the Igbo experience and hospitality right in the heart of Igboland," said Igbo Studies Association’s president, Dr. Ada Azodo of Indiana University and Purdue University. "ISA is, therefore, highly appreciative of ASA's sponsorship and partnership in ensuring a successful conference in Nigeria."

"We are looking forward to an engaging academic exercise covering issues in the humanities, social sciences, legal studies, business administration, physical and natural sciences, agriculture, cultural studies, political science, etc., as they pertain to what it really means to be Igbo in today's world," said the Chair of the 2017 Conference Committee, Dr. Ogechi Anyanwu of the University of Kentucky.

As a result of ever-changing domestic and global trends, including modernity, globalization, immigration, emigration, materialism, environmental and climatic changes, economic uncertainty, and sociopolitical unrests, the Igbo people continue to reexamine and reevaluate their collective identity and ways to retell their story.

This conference in Owerri provides a wonderful opportunity for academic minds from various parts of the world to assemble and engage in substantive reflections that potentially facilitate a positive transformation of Igboland, Nigeria and the world.

In addition to some 200 academic papers, various plenary sessions and a keynote address by Professor Ernest Nneji Emenyonu (a prominent Igbo scholar, literary luminary and specialist in the works of Chinua Achebe, Cyprian Ekwensi and Flora Nwapa), the conference program includes an Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Association and a closing banquet at Greatwood Hotels, Port Harcourt-Owerri Road, Federal Secretariat Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.

Local and international artists, intellectuals, and students are encouraged to join the Association in an interdisciplinary dialogue that explores the influence of the changing world on the Igbo world.
