Description:

Theme: Mu na Gi: Igbo Culture of Self
Similar to many ethnicities and societies in Africa, the Igbo have faced numerous challenges, one of which is the complexity of the relationship between the self and community or the other.

Some claim that the Igbo have no king or a sense of the collective political will and the common good. This has often led to the suggestion that the seeming present state of anarchy in Igbo society is traceable to the notion of “rugged individual” and libertarian political disposition. Is this true? Do the Igbo have no sense of the other? Professor Nwakanma explores the dynamics of this relationship and its implications in the Igbo common polity. He engages with the fundamental question of the way forward.
